Most last 2 or more years and 3 to 5 seems typical. The chip has the information about all the systems configuration such as the hard disk date and time etc. If the battery dies or is removed then when your computer boots it will have forgotten the current date and time.
I have a number of workstations in the office lasting 6 and more years and only replace a handful in over 30 years of building repairing and maintaining computers.
In June 1997 I bought a Dell Latitude LM P133 and although it usually resided on on its Power Supply the three-hour battery operation was often used and within 30 months working battery life was below. It varies quite a bit. CMOS battery is expected to last 5-7 years with the system plugged in and PSU switch on doesnt matter if the system is powered on or not.
